About this event

Join this focused, one-hour webinar, Urban Tree Diversity: A Toolkit for Municipal Foresters, to explore practical strategies for enhancing species richness in your urban canopy. You’ll learn how to assess current diversity, select site-appropriate species palettes, and implement planting and maintenance plans that boost resilience to pests, disease, and climate stress. Ideal for city foresters, parks managers, and urban forestry staff seeking actionable tools and best practices to build healthier, more sustainable community forests.
About the Presenter: Dr. Asia Dowtin is an Assistant Professor of Urban Forestry in MSU’s Department of Forestry and a contributor to the Forest Carbon & Climate Program. She earned her PhD and MS in Geography (Forest Hydrology & Biogeochemistry, Climatology) from the University of Delaware and a BS in Meteorology from SUNY Oneonta. Her research employs in situ sampling and laboratory techniques to quantify hydrologic and nutrient cycling in urban forests—examining how canopy structure, spatial context, and species composition influence ecosystem services. Dr. Dowtin translates these insights into management plans and educational materials, leading projects like the Urban Forestry Stakeholder Survey and developing extension programs to optimize municipal tree functions.
